And somewhere within reasonable driving distance, a farmers market is already in full swing — with strawberries that taste the way strawberries are supposed to taste, bread that's still warm, and the particular satisfaction of knowing exactly where your food came from.

Southern California has hundreds of certified farmers' markets. Here are the ones worth building a morning around.

Pasadena Certified Farmers' Market — Tuesday Mornings

Tucked into Villa Parke Center on Holly Street, this Tuesday market is a genuine neighborhood institution — a year-round market running from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It has the feel of a market that locals use rather than one designed for visitors, which is precisely what makes it worth visiting. Come for the citrus, the stone fruit in June, and the vendors who have been selling here long enough to know your name.

Santa Barbara Saturday Certified Farmers' Market

Established in 1982, the Saturday market at the corner of Santa Barbara and Cota Streets hosts 110 vendors and is the largest farmers' market in the city. Honey, dates, pistachios, berries, and flowers in abundance — and the kind of unhurried Saturday morning energy that makes Santa Barbara feel like it was designed specifically to slow you down. It runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and rewards arriving early and staying longer than planned.

Newport Beach Farmers' Market — Sunday Mornings

Located just steps from the sand, the Newport Beach Farmers' Market is ideal for a beach-day start. After picking up fresh produce or a quick snack, take a stroll along the pier or stop by the nearby Dory Fleet Fish Market for some of the freshest seafood around. Sundays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Pair it with a walk on the pier, and you've built the perfect Newport morning before 11 a.m.

Orange Home Grown Certified Farmers' Market — Saturdays

A grass-roots effort started in 2009 in Old Towne Orange, dedicated to bringing locally grown, nutrient-dense, sustainable food to the community. Beyond the produce, it offers live music, cooking demos, yoga classes, and food trucks every Saturday. It is the kind of market that feels like a community deciding collectively to do things right — and it shows in everything on the tables.

Irvine Farmers Market — Saturdays

Often considered one of the largest and most popular markets in Orange County, the Irvine Farmers Market features an impressive selection of fresh seasonal produce — including unique vegetables you may not see anywhere else — alongside artisan goods and live entertainment. Don't leave without the famous apple cider. It has been a crowd favorite long enough to have earned the designation.

Montrose Harvest Market — Sundays

Up in the foothills above Pasadena, the Montrose Harvest Market is one of the great underrated farmers' markets in the San Gabriel Valley — a Sunday morning institution that combines exceptional local produce with the particular charm of a small-town main street that hasn't lost its identity. Go for the stone fruit. Stay for the atmosphere.

The best meal you eat in Southern California this weekend might not come from a restaurant at all. It might come from a canvas tent on a Saturday morning, handed to you by the person who grew it.
