Let's Go Somewhere Worth Going From the Editor · Inaugural Issue

Southern California has always been generous with its pleasures. I know this because I grew up here.

I was born in downtown Los Angeles and raised in Monterey Park, in a household where magazines were part of the furniture. Sunset Magazine arrived every month, and my father read it the way some people read the news — carefully, with intention, with a highlighter of the mind. On weekends, he'd load us into the car and take us somewhere he'd read about. A garden. A restaurant. A drive up the coast. We didn't always know where we were going. We just trusted that someone had done the work of finding it, and that it would be worth the trip.

It almost always was.

That feeling — of being handed a destination by someone who actually knew — is the feeling I've been chasing ever since. And it's the feeling that TheMag4.com exists to give you.

I've spent most of my life in this extraordinary place. Both sides of my family have been woven into the fabric of Southern California for generations. My mother's uncle painted backdrops and sets for the studios. My father and his siblings were extras in old Hollywood films. As a child, I sat on sets alongside my cousins, watching Southern California tell its own story to the world. It left a mark. It always does.

This region has never needed an advocate. It has always known what it was. But somewhere between the algorithm and the aggregator, between the listicle and the paid placement, something got lost — the simple, reliable, trusted voice that says: here is what's happening this weekend, here is where to go, here is what's worth your time.

That's what TheMag4.com is.

We are a curated guide to Southern California living — from Pasadena to Palm Springs, Santa Barbara to Newport Beach, and anywhere else this region decides to surprise us. Every month we publish our issue. Every week our subscribers receive a newsletter. Every day we're out there — searching, tasting, walking, discovering — so you don't have to wonder what to do with your weekend.

We curate, we don't aggregate. We choose, we don't list. We cover dining, arts and culture, events, farmers markets, hiking trails, hidden gems, and the kind of experiences that don't show up on the first page of a Google search — because the best things rarely do.

The search bar at the top of this page is the whole idea. Type a city in Southern California. Find something worth doing. That's the promise — and it's the same promise those magazines of the 1960's made to my father every time he turned the page.

Subscribe. It's free for now. And when it isn't, you'll know it was worth it.

The best is always somewhere just around the corner. We'll show you which corner.
